CHAPTER FOUR

Before she knew it, more than a week had passed. Each day had been filled with fun, new discoveries, and the hottest sex she’d ever had. Each day was also a stark reminder of how little time she had remaining with Nash, and neither one of them had mentioned anything about the future or what would happen once her vacation was over.

Tonight, she pushed aside her turmoil over that and took a deep breath as she clutched his hand while staring up at the building.

“Are you sure you want to go in, sugar?”

The trace of concern in his voice brought a rush of tears to her eyes, but she blinked them away. “Yes, I’m sure.” From old photos she had seen, she realized the place had clearly been renovated and not just restored, but that made sense, since it had been twenty years since the shooting. No longer The Red Feather Club, it was now called Bad Penny, and other than the downscale name, it looked like a reasonably classy club.

With a deep breath, still clutching his fingers, she stepped up the three stairs to enter the building, which offered a flight of stairs up or down, along with a sign directing them to go downstairs for the club, or upstairs for a dentist and an attorney’s office. There was certainly a element of raw nerves involved, because she was revisiting a place she hadn’t been in twenty years, and the place where her parents had been murdered. She had vaguely intended to do so while in New York, and when she had realized the days were ticking away, she had chosen tonight as the time to face the task.

She had absolutely no memory of The Red Feather Club, so she didn’t know how much the interior had changed, but the current owner had picked a nice décor, going with stark black and white accented by small touches of silver and red.

There was a bouncer waiting at the bottom of the stairs, but all he did was check their identification to verify their age. He appeared to have less stringent standards than the guys at Nash’s club. Or else he wasn’t so drunk on his own power.

Nash led her to a table, and they discovered the club was filled to half-capacity. A server in a black minidress came to them within moments of their sitting down to take an order. After she had disappeared, Karma sat and stared around the club, taking it all in.

She waited for a rush of emotion that never came. This was just a
